Hi, I was just re-reading the last chapter (as I wait patiently for another one, hint hint.. ;D) and I was wondering about powering the laser the SGC is going to use to give Anubis a nasty surprise when it turns his GateBuster to rubble. The Gate itself is a giant superconductor storing energy, as you pointed out in the chapter. The SGC was going to bring in "...a couple of naquadah generators and the biggest capacitors we can get...". Why not simply hook the Gate into the circuit as well? That will solve the problem of the power buildup and also mean that the more juice Anubis throws at them, the stronger the return fire! :) In one possible outcome, it drops the energy in the Gate faster than the wormhole itself can bing it in, and the wormhole destabilises and collapses. Alternately, it simply sends a massive laser pulse through the wormhole, blowing the crap out of the GateBuster lens on the far side, with feedback detonating the rest of the array.
Just figured I'd mention some food for thought...
Keep up the great work, with both this and the 'Compelled' verse!

Hey, I seem to have only read about your McKay when he was at Area 51 and in Russia... Would this be his first visit to Cheyenne Mountain?
Neat trick. Good idea giving an outsider like Jonas the perspective needed to bring in the laser :D
Hmm, want about two hours worth of enjoyable links?

Love the story.
I was a little hesitant to read at first, as i do not know X-Com at all, only having heard of it from the KNight of the Hellmouth series.
It is sparking an idea in my head that i had previously figured un-doable.
Love to see more.

Loved this one, but I have one question or so.
Are they going to get one of the Space cannons down the shaft or are they going to take the stargate out into space and try it out there instead?

Every time I read one of your updates all I can say is "Cool!"
You came up with the perfect explanation for the whole SGC. I loved reading: ‘Anybody that wouldn’t want to come along with us and do what we do is whacked’ O’Neill declared with sincerity. It was the greatest job in the world, he thought, visiting other worlds, learning from ancient and wise cultures, encountering advanced civilisations and when that got dull, which it tended to pretty quick, there was always the shooting at people who really deserved to be shot at which never got old and gave you a warm glow of job satisfaction every day.
I know I sure would love to get assigned to SG1. Even if it was for only for a few weeks until I was dust in the solar wind. Lol!

"so I'm going with the notion that there's a band from say the IR to UV frequencies which won't go through a wormhole for whatever reason."
I'd theorize from both the movie, and the early shows that the visible light spectrum is used as a control mechanism for the gate, with the whole roller coaster ride thing that we saw a few times, since we know that the gate network can communicate with gates without opening an actual wormhole, (Likely this could be manipulated, for broadcasting messages to all other gates, without opening a gate) I'd guess that the actual dialing wouldn't be in this spectrum, however.
Interestingly enough, the fun noise they added to gate travel likely would have something do with this also, since sound waves don't travel through the gate.

Another nugget of excellence! I know how they dealt with this problem in canon, but I always wondered what would happen if they stuffed an active stargate into an al-kesh and tried to use the hyperdrive with the wormhole active. It could take out a large chunk out of the solar system, or you can have a ship that never need to dock for supplies. Or it can just dump the active gate on Anubis' world and let him blow his own planet up. In any case, can't wait to see if that large base-defense FEL laser works its merry hell on the ancient device at the other end. Great job!

Every time I read a chapter of this I get more impressed with the amount of background you must have researched.
Well done again.
One problem I had was Jack calling Hammond, George, a couple of times during their conversation.
Also when is Carter going to introduce McKay to Andianov?
As always, eagerly awaiting the next installment.
Thanks

Maybourne as a genius who should be watched and Sharp's low mileage head... great ideas :) On a more serious note, so are the lasers - absolutely great idea, let's hope the Goa'uld don't figure it out too... or get it from someone like the Trust.

Ok that was a surprise. Didn't expect this one so early. But great job. I liked the interactions between the characters and how you incorporated the original storyline. And i like the plan. I would have expected for X-Com to simply load up the gate on a spaceship and launch it at some Goa'Uld world and afterwards steal a gate from somewhere but firing back at Anubis would be quite humilating for him :)
P.S By the way o bow before my awesome power . That made me laugh so hard. I loved it

Excellent chapter! Why do I see power-armored Lt. Hailey as the new Samus Aran from Metroid fame?
Comments from author:
I had to google Samus Aran to find out who that was so it's definitely not a deliberate act on my part!

I don't know what it is about your stories, possibly it's the "I wonder how they'd react" bit, but when I was reading another story I came up with a possible explanation of how the Ancients, Nox, and Asguard can open Stargates without an unstable event horizon and immediately thought about this fic. Now unfortunately the humans of earth probably won't be able to figure this out until they get to Atlantis and find remote DHDs on the Puddle Jumpers, but the idea is this:
Asguards, Nox, or Ancients have a small portable 'one shot' DHD with a pre-set destination (such as the Asguard home world in another galaxy, or somewhere else even) and all they have to do is push a button and it auto dials. Now we know that you don't actually have to rotate the gate to dial, so they can establish a connection instantly with the address being dialed automatically like that. The REAL trick is that the gate doesn't dial it, it's a micro wormhole, which DOES produce an unstable event horizon, but it's the size of a pinprick, so you likely wouldn't notice it. Then, fed from the OTHER SIDE, the gate powers the event horizon to expand and cover the whole interior of the Gate. You could easily use the power of a single Naqueda core of a Staff Weapon to power that for even intergalactic gates, although you would need a ZPM on the other side to power a full intergalactic gate, but it does work well for the Asguard's gate back to their home galaxy, without needing anyone to dial out for them.

Glad to know you're inspired anyhow ;-)
Interesting idea with the gate dialling (or not dialling) you've got there.

Have to hand it to Mayborne. I sort of like the switch, and admitting that you were going to double cross them. Should keep them guessing for a while. Now if you could just get ahold of the Krull (sp?) warrior gear to mix in with the power armor. Can't remember what time period that's introduced though.
Anyways thanks for another great chapter.
Comments from author:
The Kull Warriors turned up in Season 7... just in time to meet X-COM Powered-Armour coming through the gate in decent numbers ;-)
