Review of story "By Starlight Thus" from
TanydwrNice story.
For slang and other translations, try this site:
http://www.effingpot.com/slang.shtml It's brilliant! On the whole, I think you've captured Donna and Rose pretty well, bearing in mind that the Doctor is inevitably from some corner of Britain (the Ninth was from the North, and the Tenth is sort of southern/London-ish - hard for the less distinct accents, and my own is screwed up anyway - Dad's from the south, Mum's from the Isle of Man, and I've lived between Wales, the north-east and the north-west!).
Don't worry about the milder Americanisms, because Rose, if not Donna, may well use them given the popularity of American TV programmes over here (Buffy, CSI, Charmed, Angel, Bones, Heroes... All sorts. Seems like Doctor Who's our most populat export).
Still, hope the link helps. You can also get onto other aspects, such as differences in food - like what you call cookies, we call biscuits, sometimes shortened to 'biccies' (I'm not entirely sure how to spell the shortened version, it's not something you write down, just say...).
And don't get me started on 'pissed'. Suffice to say, if we're angry, we're pissed off, never pissed. If we're drunk, we're pissed.
Keep up the good work, I want to read more!
Lol, Tanydwr
Heh, it's things like biscuits that give me pause - if I'm actively seeking a British slang phrase or something I can find it, but trying to remember that Rose wouldn't call'em cookies, that's another story entirely (not to mention the apparent absence of a word for American style biscuits, which are a staple of the US diet!)
Thanks for the link though, I think that'll be really helpful. I've got a beta now so hopefully that will help as well, haha. I'm really glad you enjoyed the story so far, the next update is coming very very shortly :)
