Sitting quietly on her bed she couldn’t help herself and once again picked up the letter, gently caressing the smooth cream coloured parchment as she admired the grace of the calligraphy, written she was sure, with a fountain pen, nothing so crude as a ballpoint.

Dear Miss Willow Rosenburg

I apologize if this should come completely out of the blue but your father and I have never truly seen eye to eye about things and I doubt that your mother even knows of my existence.

I do however like to keep track of who and where my family are, which is what we are, you and I. My name is Albus and I am your great grandfather, on your father’s side.

Unfortunately my daughter had a falling out with the rest of her family, myself included, and left us on rather bad terms, gone before I even knew a rift had been formed or could make an effort to bridge said rift. When I eventually found her again I learned that she had married a Jewish gentleman by the name of Rosenburg, having gone so far as to legally change her name and religion in an effort to separate herself from us, I also discovered that she had a son of seventeen years or so named Ira.

Unfortunately when I arranged to meet with him I discovered Ira to have his mothers prejudices against myself and the rest of the family. His rather strong Jewish beliefs also somehow seemed to set us at odds on the general grounds of belief and faith. That is not to say that I bear any prejudice myself towards his, and I would assume your own religion, rather that he could not accept me and mine.

Imagine my surprise and delight when I next hear of him to discover that I now have a twenty something year old great granddaughter that I never knew about.

It is my fervent hope that should you have been given any pre conceived notions about myself that you would be gracious enough to set them aside and allow me to get to know you and perhaps tell you something about myself in the process, for if I have learnt anything over the years it is the value of family.

Please find enclosed my postal address and know that I most eagerly hope for a reply.

Yours in fondest love

Albus Dumbledore

Willow had read and re-read the letter countless times since she had received it that morning, unable to put into words the feeling in her heart at its contents. Here was the one thing she had truly craved her whole life but never really come close to receiving. Here was an offer of affection, of bonding, even of love from someone who was family. Family by blood and not just the family of friends she had in the scooby gang.

And the fact that her father seemed to disapprove of him just made her believe all the more that here was someone with whom she could connect.

For she also read in his letter the one thing he never actually came out and said yet was in every line that he wrote. She read it so easily because she was lonely too.
