~*~Faith took one last drag and crashed the cigarette under her boot, her mouth settling into a grim line as she breathed the smoke out. She made her way up the dirt driveway her footsteps light and nearly soundless in the darkness of the night.
She tore her gaze from the house in front of her to the full moon that hung overhead further away than the movies showed. When she saw the moon she didn’t think of romance, she thought of monsters and the girls she had trained to fight them.
The fifteen year old wildcat that had left this place on a night much like this one had come a long way.
All she had had ten years ago was a wad of cash she had stolen out of her uncle’s safe and a half pack of cigarettes from the coffee table. Two weeks later and back in her hometown of Boston, hundreds of miles away from the sanity of her uncle’s place, she had met up with the kind British lady who had told of her destiny and that she did have a place in the world, that her life mattered.
Now she was back and a life time had passed. She had changed but some things were still the same, she was still the dark haired girl that had tried to find a refuge at her uncle’s house, an uncle that had learned of her existence too late to change the course of her life but in time to give her a place she could think of home.
Even ten years later.
She made her way to the porch and she didn’t hesitate as she rapped on the door her gut twisting.
The door opened and the man that faced her wasn’t who she was expecting. His voice was rough “No one here wants to buy anything.” He informed her coldly, Faith saw the dried blood on his arm almost covered by the sleeves of the jacket he wore in the warm night.
Faith gave him a smile, a quick flash of teeth that didn’t reflect any joy as her body tensed “I’m looking for Bobby.” Seeing the guy hesitate his eyes suspicious as they took her in implying something that was the furthest from the truth Faith informed him, “I’m his niece.”
He moved aside his words muttered as he ushered her in “Didn’t know the bastard had a niece.”
Faith shrugged as she stepped into the house that had stayed the same and leaned down to pet the dog that was most likely an offspring of the puppy Bobby had given her “Yeah, well we haven’t exactly been in touch.”
“Dad, who is it?” and the testosterone in the room kept rising as two men around her age entered the front room, the shorter one with a knife and a rag in hand, the other holding an old book.
The man beside her - their father grimaced, his words clipped, “Apparently boys, this is Bobby’s niece…”
“Faith.” She supplied, taking in the newcomers noticing the ease they moved within her uncle’s house, she would have to watch out for them. The shorter one, and he wasn’t so short, held the knife with a long familiarity and a fondness in his touch she could understand.
“John, I know you don’t like research but if you don’t get your ass back in the study I will fill it with rock salt.” A man growled as he entered the room behind John’s two sons, looking frustrated and tired.
Faith buried her hands in her pockets trying to stand straighter and her voice was flat as she tried to stop it from trembling “Sorry ‘bout that, John was just letting me in.”
The man turned to her and his eyes widened, a slew of emotions ghosting past them before he pulled a mask on. “Faith,” he breathed her name softly, “it’s been awhile.”
She nodded, her muscles tightening to the point where they hurt “Got a little caught up in some things I couldn’t handle but I’m back,” she offered the last part with an uneasy smile holding her arms out.
“What no hug?” she tried to joke, feeling herself losing control of a situation she should have gone on avoiding.
She didn’t expect what happened next. She felt herself engulfed in Bobby’s arms his voice gruff in her ears, “I missed you baby girl.” His hold on her tightened and she let herself relax against him her eyes closing. “If you ever pull a stunt like that again I’ll skin your ass.” Her uncle muttered gravely and Faith felt like laughing.
Things would be okay, she still had a hell of a lot of explaining to do but for now she was home.
