----

He really should start being less surprised by these things, Charles Gunn thought to himself with exasperation.

As he gave himself a minute or two- or very possibly fifteen, as his probably concussed head didn't seem to want to lift off the ground- Gunn started to move a hand against what felt like a metal surface that undoubtedly did nothing for his health as far as a landing went. Adjusting until his elbows were bent, he braced himself as he slowly got to his feet. Not an easy task.

Damn portals, he mentally cursed as he assessed his situation. Through all his years hunting vampires and demons in L.A., mystical energy that transported you from one dimension to another was definitely not something he could have ever imagined encountering, not to mention being somewhat familiar with. But then he'd never thought he'd leave his boys to start helping a member of the living dead run a supernatural investigation team that fought the monsters under the bed.

A bit Scooby Doo for his tastes, but he wasn't about to complain.

Well, actually he was. Probably with language his grandmother would have scolded and gave him a bit of a slap for. Because of all the things that could have happened on this mission of Angel's, they hadn't anticipated any kind of portal. Ugly-ass demons with claws the size of broadswords yes; portals no. Portals they had in no way, shape or form been prepared for.

Gunn snorted. Fucking crafty demons. Where the hell had the vampires with nothing on their mind but bloodlust gone? It was really annoying when the demons suddenly start to use what little brainpower they have.

Probably minions, he pondered to himself. No way a big-and-ugly that grunted that much had the mental capacity for something so technical as a plan.

Anyway, so there they were, immersed in battle and losing some blood when suddenly someone, or more likely something decided to get friendly with the magics. Half-way from stabbing a demon through the chest and without warning the portal that had to have been meant for Angel ended up pulling the wrong body through it before it closed into nothing. He'd instantly felt the change in atmosphere the moment it hit his skin. He might have even contemplated it had his head not hit the surface before the rest of his body.

Footsteps.

Wonderful. Of course there was going to be footsteps. Footsteps that probably belonged to people who wanted to kill him, if his luck was anything to go by. All he knew was he was going to kill that freaking vampire if he ever got back.

He was probably lucky, in retrospect, that he looked like such a bloody mess at the moment. If not for that then the brunette girl's eyes might not have widened in worry as the person who appeared to be in charge shouted something that sounded distinctly not English. As it was, he felt like he was going to pass out any second. He thought that was probably obvious the way he was swaying.

"I..." He couldn't help his voice from trailing off. Couldn't quite keep the world around him as steady anymore. He stumbled.

Great. Back on the floor.

The girl rushed forward before the rest could complain. And they did.

"Kaylee!"

Kaylee. So brunette girl had a name.

"Are- are you alright?" The concern laced in her words wasn't lost on him. He couldn't stop a chuckle at that. The other still had guns at the ready, now closer to him and looking suspicious.

"Oh yeah...yeah. The world is spinning, and I think there's two of you...but yeah. All good." He was losing more focus.

"Captain!" Kaylee screeched at the leader of the group. "He needs help!"

He didn't hear him speak, probably contemplating if he should help or not.

"Simon, Jayne- help me get him up."

Kaylee smiled at him. She had a nice smile, he thought as he finally lost his battle with consciousness.
