"We have a new demon to research." Xander said as soon as he walked into the hotel room. "And we have made a new friend. Well, acquaintance more like. Not quite a friend. Anyway, research."

"If they're not a friend, why're we researching for them?" Rhonda asked. "What'd he have to say?"

"We talked about what we do. They're just like us but they mostly go after spirits. They don't deal with a lot of vampires - thought they were extinct! They gave me a few things to think about, I gave him a few things to think about. Look, pull out the books and see what we've got on yellow eyes demons that visit a house on a baby on their six month birthday."

"Hunter boy told you that much?"

"He told me a yellow eyed demon was in his brother's room when he turned six months. That's it. Not a lot of demons do that, you know that. Besides, he and his dad have the smell of being really close to a demon. Well, it's more like the smell we had when properly possessed. Only a little stronger and kinda tangy."

"We'll start on it tonight then." Kyle sighed, sinking further into the bed. "Of course. Be it for us to actually get away from the books."

Heidi slapped him gently on the arm. "You know what we we're doing before we left."

"Yeah. But I can dream..."

“Ok, troops.” Xander greeted, walking into the room with a smile on his face as he clapped and rubbed his hands together. “What do we have so far?”

“Nothing much.” Tor replied. “Whatever this thing is, it’s not well documented.”

“We can’t find out from anything we’ve got. We got everything we have from other hunters encounters. I did find something, though. I’m not too sure about how we can trust the information but this demon has yellow eyes. You never see what he really looks like, as he and his kind tend to just possess people. Uh, I can’t find out what he wants, but there’s a lot of kids with powers that he visits. He seems pretty invested in these kids.”

“Hmm.” He pulled out his phone. “Thanks guys. I’ll pass on the message.”

A half an hour later, Xander found himself sitting across from John Winchester, Dean’s father, in a diner. The man was armed, two guns and a few knives, but Xander wasn’t worried.

“You’re the one following us?” John asked, eyeing the teenager.

“Hmm.” He leaned back. “Dean and me were talking yesterday. I’m guessing he told you otherwise he’d be here instead of you.”

“And you get that for meeting me once?”

“Hmm.” He said again. “I was possessed a while back and it stuck. There’s a lot of things I can tell.”

“By what?”

“Hyena then a soldier.” He paused. “Long story short, I know what I’m about. Look, I have some information you might be interested in. I get it if you don’t trust my word, but all the info me and my friends have is taken from accounts of people like you and some books we had.” He leaned forward. “The demon. You know which one I’m talking about. There’s things you’re going to want to know.”

“Not here. My place.”

Xander squinted, then nodded. “I’ll bring the books. You understand if I choose to arm myself.”

John nodded. “Tomorrow. Noon.”

“I’ll be there.”

++++++++++ ++++++++++ ++++++++++ ++++++++++ ++++++++++

“No.” Rhonda said. “It’s too dangerous.”

“You can’t go alone!” Kyle protested. “At least let one of us go with you.”

Xander shook his head. “I’m not having any of you put in danger. I’ll be armed. Trust me, guys, everything will be ok in the end.”

“Says you.” Heidi snorted.

Xander walked into the hotel door. Dean closed it and stood in front of it, gun drawn. John stood a few feet away, his own gun aimed. Both watched him with sharp eyes, the room dark as the curtains were drawn.

Xander slowly set the books on the kitchen table and sat down. He turned, but sat on a chair.

“I guess I should’ve listened to Heidi.” He muttered. “Guys? I’m not about to attack you here.”

“Right, sure.” Dean snorted. “You’re all about helping complete strangers.”

“Actually, he is.” Rhonda said, bursting into the room. In seconds, she had all the weapons confiscated from the Winchester men. “I’m not.”

“Rhonda!” Xander snapped.

She was immediately in front of him, down on one knee with her head bowed. “Sorry.”

“Give them back their weapons.” He ordered. After a moment, she did, though with great reluctance. “Now, apologise to them.”

“Sorry.” She muttered.

The two looked on in confusion.

“What the hell is going on?” John demanded.

Xander sighed and turned to Rhonda. “I guess the others are all outside, too?” She nodded. “Guys? In here. Now!”

In a matter of seconds, Heidi, Tor, and Kyle joined them, down on their own knees with heads bowed.

“What the…?” Dean murmured.

“Sorry about this.” Xander apologised. “I told them to stay away and let me handle this.” He turned to his Pack. “You can stand. But keep quiet.”

They stood and moved back.

“Were all these…kids possessed too?” John asked.

Xander nodded. “Yeah. A friend of mine did a reversal but it didn’t quite work the way he hoped. We all remembered, all kept some…qualities of the hyenas.”

“What happened?”

“Long story short? Imported hyenas, bullies, a crazy owner, staring, a ritual, fighting, us changed, spell done, memories and qualities kept.” He replied, smiling. “Crazy zoo keeper was pissed when it was us and not him that the hyenas went for. He ended up getting eaten by them.” He turned, putting his back to the Winchester’s. “Whatever happened to the hyenas, anyway?”

“Don’t you remember?” Tor asked. “We made sure they all got home safe, and no-one was any the wiser.”

“Ah, yes. Remind me to send something up next month.”

Heidi nodded. “We did when they moved, as well.”

“Cool.” He turned yet again. “Anyway, these are the books you’ll be wanting to look through. Unfortunately, you can’t keep them. But I’ll lend them to you. You want to know anything else?”

John surveyed those around him. “What’s your motivation for helping us?”

“Nothin’.” Xander replied, completely honest. “This demon is bad news, you seem in a bad way, and I just wanna help anyway I can.” He reached into his pocket, aware of the two hunters tensing. He pulled out a card with a few numbers on it. “When I go back home, these are the numbers you can contact me by. The others get in contact with me Pack here, and some good friends back home who can get you me if I don’t answer any of the previous ones. You’re welcome to check them all out, as well as our backgrounds. Just remember, not all is as it seems.”

“What the hell does that mean?” Dean demanded.

“That, I’m afraid I can’t tell you. The wards here are good, but anyone and anything can be listening in. It’s not just demons that come after us, after all.”

Kyle spoke up for the first time. “Xander, we need to go. You need to tell them all that they need to. They can contact us if they want more.”

“We’re not leaving until tomorrow.” The Alpha said, eyes flaring green for the barest of moment. Kyle whimpered, baring his neck as he once more dropped to his knees. “I’m not happy with any of you at the moment, and I don’t need you to tell me what’s what. Heidi, you take Kyle and return to our room. Make sure I’ve not missed anything. Rhonda, you’ll go with Dean when he goes to pick up his younger brother.”

“She’s not coming with me!”

“I didn’t say that.” Xander soothed. “She’s gonna be running behind you, protecting you. We…I may have put you in danger. I may have put anyone we come in contact with in danger, and I’d like to make sure you stay safe if I have. It’s unlikely, I’ll give you that, but I don’t want to take any chances right now.” His eyes flashed yet again. “Heidi, Kyle, go. Tor, you’ll be staying here with me.”

Kyle stood and meekly followed Heidi from the room. The door closed with barely a whisper behind them.

“What are the things I need to know?” John asked, as Dean discreetly followed the other two. Rhonda, however, was right behind him.

“I caught a scent of you and Dean. You smell like you’ve been around someone who has a bit of a demon in them.” He noticed how the man tensed, and held his hands out. “Hey, having a demon is not necessarily a bad thing. I happen to know a few good, peaceful demons. When I spoke to Dean, it got me thinking, so I pulled out the books and we researched.” He leaned forward. “It’s all right here in the books. The last one you’ll come across is a journal of ours. It matches with the information, along with our own notes. I hope it’ll help you. You may not trust me, but at least read them. Please.”

Tor walked over and dropped to one knee before Xander. He placed his head on the other teen’s knee. Xander rewarded him by carding his fingers through his hair.

“Why?”

“It’s about the one with the scent. Your youngest.”

“Sammy?”

++++++++++ ++++++++++ ++++++++++ ++++++++++ ++++++++++

“That was a very stupid thing you did.” Xander lectured, pacing up and down the motel room. “You put yourselves in danger.”

“But you-” Heidi began.

His eyes flashed green and he snarled warningly.

She quickly lowered her eyes and bowed down a little further.

They realised that he was in deep; feeling of helplessness, rage, and desperation. He’d given off vibes the minute Rhonda had stepped into the other room. He hadn’t wanted to put them in danger, but realised that they didn’t want him in danger either. It had caused his most possessive feelings to surface, wanting to keep them safe and reassure them that he was safe, and punish them for disobeying him.

“You’re not to fight for the next two weeks.” He began. “Or climax for the next week. I may use you however I see fit, but you will not enjoy it. If you do, the consequences will be dire.” He hated being cruel, but he had been so terrified for them, even though he knew they wouldn’t have been hurt by the hunters. The threat had been there, and that was all that mattered. “And for tonight? You’ll all sleep on separate corners of the room, on the floor.”

That made them all tense; they always slept with each other. It was comfort and security. It was only then, however, that they realised just how much they had caused their Alpha to worry.

“Yes, Sir.” They chorused.

“Good.” He sat on the bed. “Now, come here a moment.” They rushed over and they shared a puppy pile. “Don’t put yourselves in danger, guys. Alright? I’d go crazy if I knew you’d been hurt because of me.”

“We’d feel the same.” Tor informed.

“I know. You just need to trust my judgement on this, alright? Now, lets all settle down.”

++++++++++ ++++++++++ ++++++++++ ++++++++++ ++++++++++

“I read it.” John replied. “And I checked up on all of it.”

“I knew you would.” The teen replied. “And the verdict?”

“As much as I hate to admit this, it’s all safe.” He sighed. Walking over, he pulled a beer from the fridge. “Want one?”

One eyebrow rose. “You do know I’m underage, right?” John just looked at him. Xander smiled and accepted the beer. “Thanks.”

“So, about Sam…”

“I’m sorry.” He said. “He’s not the only one. But of what I can see, you’re the only one to notice it and start doing something. Who recognised it.” He took a sip. “Everyone’s going to be telling you that Sam’s destined for evil, just like the others. It’s true. But he doesn’t have to take it up. It’s all about choices, John. Just ‘cause he’s got this thing inside him that makes him a little different, doesn’t make him evil. If you raise him right, he’ll be good. He can go bad. But that’s mostly up to you.”

“Me?”

“Yup. Raise him good and right, and it’ll have a whole deeper impact when he’s older.”

“That’s no strictly true.” He replied. “I looked into you.”

“Ah. We’ll, my case is different from yours on account of that they have no real idea what’s out there. And lucky for me, I had some real good friends to count on.” He smiled slightly, and took another sip. “Hmm, good beer. Anyway, it’s up to you what you do with all of this information. You can tell them and others, or you can keep it to yourself.” He quickly gulped down the rest and stood, picking up the books as he did so. “I’ve got to go, we’re heading on now. It’s almost time to go back. If you ever need me, just give us a call. Bye, John.” He walked out of the door and headed to the minivan that was parked just down the road. He stepped on and handed the books to Rhonda, who immediately began to put them away safely.
