Chapter One: A Not So Happy Birthday

A/N: So I was sitting alone, watching some Grey’s Anatomy… When an idea hit me. Gawd I wish I’d just stop finding inspiration because I have SO many WIPS that it’s just ridiculous but hopefully this weekend I’ll be wrapping some stories up so that it isn’t THAT bad… *grumble* *sigh* Oh and the fact that I was watching GA has no relevance to this story… Kinda funny huh? ;0)

Tru Davies had her life turned upside down three years ago. She had started getting…Visions? Calls for help? Whatever they were they made her life more complicated than it’s ever been. Ever since her grant had fallen through she’s been working at the City Morgue: and perhaps the reasoning for being there was to keep her from moving on with her life. She had missed the ability to take the tests twice now, because of her second job.

The job that helped her save people from certain death. It wasn’t something she asked for and she learned that she inherited this particular trait from her mother. On a more disturbing level: she found that her father has been keeping secrets from her as well. What kind? Well she wasn't certain but little tidbits have been giving her many questions. Like the other day: when she saw Jack and her father shaking hands with smiles on their faces.

Now, her life was taking another horrible turn: one that she hadn’t really seen coming.

“…You even listening?”

She snapped out of her reverie and stared up at the man she loved. The one she saved to be with…the one that was currently dumping her in a bar on her birthday. Life really handed you a lot of crap-filled days.

“Yeah, I’m listening,” she said, a frown on her face. “You’re dumping me, after all we’ve been through: because I’m not paying you enough attention?”

“Tru…”

“Save it Jensen.” She got up from her chair, the leg of it scraping against the floor. She quickly grabbed her purse and coat and stomped out of the bar. Her friend, Lindsey, caught her eye while sitting with Harrison and Tru offered a fake smile before escaping. She didn’t want to deal with the pity that her friend would give her. She’d take it tomorrow. Instead, she decided the best thing to do was go to work… She knew she’d be accepted there…

Crying is what Tru heard as she stepped off of the elevator and into the hall that lead to the morgue. Curious, she followed the sounds, putting on her crisp white lab jacket over the simple black dress she wore while she walked. Pulling her hair up into a ponytail she pushed through the swinging doors to see Davis hunched over a body, shoulders shaking. Tru instantly hurried over to her friend and out a hand on his shoulder.

“Davis?”

His crying stopped and slowly, ever so slowly he looked up. His eyes widened as he took in the figure before him and he tried forming words but none could come out. Afraid that it may be someone he was close to, or someone she was close to, on the table Tru looked down, and soon she was speechless.

It was like staring into a mirror. She had the same face, the same hair, the same… Everything. Tru stared at her with wide eyes, trying to think of a logical explanation, trying to think of how the hell this was possible…

“T-Tru?”

“Davis? What? I mean…”

“Oh God!” His arms were around her but she couldn’t return the hug, her body was limp as she continued to look down at her twin. “You’re alive! When they rolled you in I thought… I thought…”

“Who is she?” No answer, and Tru pushed Davis off of her, panic building inside her. “Who is she?!”

“I… I don’t know,” said Davis as Tru went to the tray where all of the personal belongings were located. “She didn’t have any I.D. on her but there was a book of matches from a local motel called ‘The Ruby Slipper’. They found her body in an abandoned warehouse near the docks after getting the call of gunshots in the area. Tru… Who is she?”

“I don’t know… Oh God, I don’t know!” Tru was shaking now and she felt a little faint so she dropped to the floor and Davis was there, holding her for support. “What happened? How did she…”

“Are you sure…”

“Just tell me,” she said softly, tears finally stopping as she stared blankly at the body that lay above her, not feeling the coldness of the floor against her bare legs.

“A stab wound to the chest was what did it. She has multiple abrasions and contusions, a couple defensive wounds, but there’s something else.”

“What?” asked Tru.

“There were traces of sulfur on her skin,” said Davis.

“Sulfur?”

“Tru, are you sure you’re ok?”

“Would you be ok if a twin you didn’t know about was rolled into the morgue?”

“Ok, stupid question,” said Davis as he helped Tru up.

“I didn’t know, I mean I…”

“Hey…”

At the voice, Tru slowly looked up, not hearing the words Davis was speaking to her. Eyes, the same color and shape as hers, were open and looking into hers. They were pleading, filled with fear but also a trace of what looked to be anger.

“Help me…”

Rewind.

Past the break up.

Past the surprise party that was thrown for her.

Past the unexpected birthday card she received in the mail from her father.

Past the expected visit from Harrison with the poorly wrapped, but appreciated gift of a charm bracelet.

To now, shooting up in bed, gasping for air while the events played again and again in her head. Swirling around and around, confusing her. Shocking her. Then, making her gain a face of determination.

She had a sister out there somewhere.

And it was up to Tru to save her.
