"When did you come in to the library?" Xander asked Cordy once they got back to her place.
"Behind Willow," Cordy told him, "But she started on Giles and he returned fire so we went into the stacks until the smoke cleared. What did she do to make Giles that mad?"
"She stole his magic books," Xander told her, "And Ethan's."
"Why?" Larry asked.
"Because Giles wasn't teaching her fast enough," Xander told him. You don't seem shocked by this."
"I'm a jock, Xander," Larry told him, "But I'm not blind or stupid. I've noticed a lot of my friends have disappeared, I've noticed the swim team as a whole is gone, and I've noticed no one seems to care. It's like this whole town is involved in a massive cover up. I ran into Cordy the other day, she was being attacked, and I kinda jumped in and saved her. I told her I wasn't buying the gang on PCP thing any more so she told me the truth. She wanted me to meet Mr. Giles today but he looked so mad we decided to wait until later. He was in his office when we all left, making sure he had all of the books back, I guess."
"Likely," Xander told him.
"Who's Sargon, Xander?" Cordy asked.
"My granddad," Xander told her, "He was a Nazi Fighter in WWII. The man who's teaching me is a friend of his, Dr. Fate. That's not his real name, it's his JSA name."
"What's Dr. Fate teaching you?" Larry asked.
"My granddad was a sorcerer, Sargon the Sorcerer, they called him. I have his ruby, what he used to draw power, the Ruby of Life. Dr. Fate is teaching me to use it. So far I know when it does or doesn’t like something, and I can make a man out of dirt."
"What tricks did he mean for you to listen for your granddad to teach you?" Larry asked.
"Granddad was a stage magician," Xander told them, "That's how he made his living and how he traveled through Nazi Occupied Europe. He was really good at it, too. His spirit is still here, helping me learn to do two or three things at once. So far I can shuffle . . . sort of . . . a deck of cards while walking. He could chew gum at the same time, too. Dr. Fate said that was how he trained himself to do two or more things at once. Dr. Fate said to use magic offensively I have to be able to split my focus."
"We can help you." Cordy told him, "I mean, if you'll tell us how."
"Sure," Xander said, "But I have a question for you two."
He was still shuffling the deck of cards, too, and Cordy was smiling.
"Ask," Larry told him.
"When did you two get so chummy?"
"We kinda grew up together," Cordy told him "Latchkey kids and all. My parents are never here and neither are his. He sees his less than I see mine, though."
"Whoa, I had no idea," Xander began.
"No one did," Larry told him, "That was the way I wanted it. Since it seemed like no one wanted to see I figured 'Why bother?' you know?"
"I'm sorry," Xander told him, "I mean, I've been a jerk to you in the past."
"Not like I didn't ask for it, hey?" Larry said.
"That's the past," Xander told him, "I made a promise to be the kind of man my granddad was. And According to Dr. Fate my granddad was a good man who gave everyone a fair chance. So . . . start over?"
"Yeah," Cordy said as Larry shook Xander's extended hand, "Start over. Will you need assistant when you're a famous stage magician?"
"Always," Xander aid, after hearing his grandfather's voice whisper in his mind, "Magicians can always use assistants."
Cordy laughed and ordered a pizza. When it arrived they talked and Xander tried out some of the card tricks his granddad had told him about while they ate. They were watching a movie when Fate's light filled the room and his Ankh appeared. He walked out of it carrying someone and Xander and Cordy were immediately on their feet.
"ANGEL!" They yelled.
"Bed, now," Fate asked. Larry led him to a room and they laid Angel down on it.
"Does he need blood?" Xander asked.
"No," Fate answered, "I already fed him. I will leave bottles of blood here for him. It is human blood but that is what he needs to heal. Make sure he drinks one bottle a day for the next."
"Won't you be here?" Cordy asked.
"When I can be," Fate answered, "But as I am on call for the League this week, we will see. I will give Xander his lessons in the morning and if Angel is awake I will handle feeding him but if he is not, one of you must."
"Right," Xander said, "Do you know anything more about Willow yet?"
"No, I will ask Micheal when I return to the Watchtower."
"Why ask him?" Larry asked.
"He lived through it," Fate told them, "He is a time jumper who survived Hitler's regime."
"Oh," Cordy breathed, "Ouch."
"Very mush so," Fate told her, "I may ask him to come and help you all here. I would ask Jason but you all have enough demons running around and Jason without Justin is far more Etrigan than Etrigan can be."
"I'd like to meet them though," Xander said.
"Later," Fate told him, "Get to know your friends as people and not stereotypes. I will return in the morning for you next lesson."
"Bye boss," Xander said as he again summoned an ankh of light and stepped through it. Cordy looked at Xander after he was gone.
"I wonder who Michael is?"
"I guess we'll find out in the morning," Xander told her as they went down to watch their movie.
