He liked her. Really, really liked her. From day one when she was put into Griffindor. Her eyes had been the deciding factor of his infatuation, they were so lost and sad: and a mirror of his own. She was a little on the shy side too, which he hadn’t gotten before. Whenever they had talked in the Commons she was so outgoing. He knew why, now. When they had to face their greatest fear in Defense Against the Dark Arts for a boggart that’d been planted inside, a screaming man had come at Faith ready to hit her and for some reason, Malfoy had stopped it. As if he understood. That had Harry thinking of Draco in a new light.

She had run out, and he had followed. He found her in the bathroom and she had simply said: ‘that was my father, he hit me a lot, and he ditched me when I was nine.’ Harry left it at that and they quickly became closer friends

When he asked her to the Yule ball, she had refused and when Harry found out that the reason was because she didn’t have a dress-he bought her one. Now, as they walked along the paths that lead to the frozen lake, he held her small hand in his and smiled at her. She looked up, her freckled nose red from the cold, and smiled brightly. He then stopped them, right in front of the lake, and took in a shaky breath.

“Faith?”

“Yeah?” she asked.

She was beautiful in her long wool coat. She wasn’t wearing a hat so her hair twisted freely in the wind. Her boots came to her knees, keeping the snow out and Harry wished he had a pair like that. He could buy them with his money, but still---he’d rather use it for important things. Like for Faith.

“I have something for you,” he said, making her anxious. He was always giving her things. Like the dress. One year he even helped her with her books. Over the summer she had nowhere to go and he had talked Hermione into letting Faith go home with her. The girls weren’t the best of friends, but they got along fine enough. In fact, with the fighting they did do, it was like they were sisters.

“Harry…” Faith smiled. “You don’t have to.”

“I want to.”

He was so sweet. She never got sweet. When she turned seven she got her first beating. At age nine she got her worst just before her father left. Her mother then took over and managed to hit her between the drugs and booze: then Faith left home at age twelve, and was approached by someone named Dumbledore. She started a year late at Hogwarts because for some reason Salem Academy didn’t want her. She didn’t know why and Dumbledore gave her a wink before saying something strange.

“Your destiny is the main reason they don’t want you, and the main reason why I do.”

Destiny… no such thing! Save for her and Harry, which was a sure thing.

Now, at age fifteen, she was the happiest she’d even been her entire life. She had Harry, a life outside of Hogwarts, and the coolest adoptive parents ever. What else could there be?

“Faith?” She stood, in front of the frozen lake in her long red coat, stunned as Harry dangled a necklace before her eyes. “Will you, I mean…”

She held her breath while her eyes watched the silver heart pendant sway in the wind. Her hands were getting cold but she was too stunned to put them in her pockets and the wind was picking up a little bit, blowing snow into her eyes.

“Harry…”

“Will you be my girlfriend?”

“Yes!” She tackled him down in the snow and laughed at his stunned expression. “I’ve been waiting for you to ask me!”

“You have?”

“Yes, I was beginning to think you were daft!”

“Faith…” He smiled, sitting up while straightening his glasses. “I’m, um… I mean…”

“Here.” She twisted around and pulled her hair aside. “Put it on?”

He did, his fingers shaking slightly before the necklace stayed around her neck. She then smiled before facing him again. They were on their knees, facing each other in the snow. Both were a little anxious now as their eyes drifted to the others lips once, twice, until finally Faith leaned forward. He followed suit and their first kiss was made with dry lips, outside with temperatures in the teens, but they didn’t care. Pulling apart, both were smiling and finally he stood then offered his hand, which she took.

“Want to go warm up with some pumpkin juice?” he asked.

“Yeah,” said Faith, grinning from ear to ear as he wrapped an arm around her waist. “Sounds good.”

“So precious,” said Dumbledore as he watched the couple. “Here’s hoping they last… Only a few more months and Faith will be called as a Slayer. That is, if the scrolls are correct. I cannot wait to see what transpires here at Hogwarts when that happens!”
