Chapter 1.

Buffy sat at the table staring into space and tapping her pencil against the open book in front of her. Her mind was back on the old days at the high school, research meetings just like this one, held in a library, just like this one. Of course they were all so much older now, they had survived numerous Apocalypse’s, including Angel’s recent mess.

Typical of him to think he could handle it alone… in the end the fight had taken out almost his entire team, save Spike and himself. Buffy’s team of Slayers had arrived in the nick of time to kill off the dragon and all the forces from Hell being thrown at them.

One good thing to come out of it, she had made her peace with Angel and Spike, finally accepting that neither were really the right guy for her. Her inner Slayer still riled at their presence, despite their vampiric nature being tempered by the soul. She and Spike still kept in contact, sharing a laugh and joke over Angel’s latest debacles or bad hair days.

As it happened; she had been on holiday, her first one in years, when the new call to arms came. Just as she was about to work on her poor tan, Giles had called with information regarding a new Apocalypse pending. So here she was, sitting at the new research table, in the new American branch of the council, on a Hellmouth in Cleveland.
Buffy sighed, leaned back over her book… and pretended to read.

“Giles, look!” Willow’s excited voice echoed in the huge building. “I found it!”

“Well done Willow, I do believe you have something there. Keep checking for anymore information, we still need to decipher it.” Giles polished his glasses as he spoke, then tucked his ever present handkerchief back into his jacket pocket.

“Giles, I need to go patrol. Vamp activity has been up recently.” Buffy’s hopeful voice piped up.

Giles already distracted and with his nose in another book, replied with a half hearted, “hmm” and a nod.

With a sigh of relief, Buffy grabbed her stake from the table, slipped it into her leather jacket and double checked the other two stakes were still in place. Yep one right there in the waistband of her jeans and the other strapped to her ankle. “Right you guys, I’m outta here, catch you later Giles!” With that, she left the library, heading downtown to the nearest cemetery.

Buffy shivered as she stepped into the cool night air. She wrapped her jacket around her a little tighter and set off at a fast pace to warm herself up. It was at times like this she really missed a slaying partner, someone to see her quips and comment on them… and someone to watch her back.

The first stop yielded no results at all, the second; not many more. Two easily dusted fledglings crossed her path. They didn’t even see her coming. Buffy was bored.

“What I wouldn’t do for a Fyarl Demon right now,” she muttered, “or a basilisk, or even a master vamp.” Turning the corner, Buffy ran into her wish, quite literally. A huge Polgara demon, seven feet tall and extremely muscular stood in her path. As it saw her drop into a fighting stance, its long spears descended from its hands and it snarled in warning. “Never been much of a gal for warnings,” Buffy quipped as she aimed a high kick at its face. The demon roared in pain, swinging for her with its left hand, while thrusting its right towards her chest. Buffy dropped to the floor, extending her leg in a low sweep and taking its legs from under it. The demon crashed to the ground, hitting its head hard on a gravestone as it went. With the thing stunned, Buffy thrust her stake into its eye, ending the demons life.

With the rest of her patrol uneventful, Buffy reported to Giles and found her way to bed. She slipped between the covers and straight into a nightmare.
