Chapter 2

Xander turned off the quiet country road he was driving along and on to a dirt road. The grass and other flora along the side of the road was overgrown and wild. ‘Just the sort of place for a demon to jump out and gut me,’ thought Xander ruefully.
As he came around the bend, there it was. An old ramshackle looking building made entirely of wood... or so it seemed. A sign in neon red and painted wood proclaimed Harvelle’s Roadhouse proudly above the door. ‘At least I’m in the right place’. He stopped the car, pulling up next to an old blue Ford pickup. Hoping the place was still open, he made his way to the entrance, where he could hear strains of classic rock playing. Biting back the urge to compare it to the roadhouse in Dusk Till Dawn (minus the half naked women of course), he opened the door in front of him hoping not to meet the same ending as in that film.

Every head in the place turned to look at him as he walked cautiously to the bar. All five of his senses were attuned to every movement in the place. He didn’t want to find himself on the wrong side of any one of these people. Dean had told him that they would most probably all be hunters and every single one of them could handle themselves against a demon... alone. The wood floor creaked under his weight as he approached the bar.

The woman behind it addressed him with a suspicious look.
“Welcome to the Roadhouse. What can I get you?” She said, sweeping her long hair back from her eyes and placing her hand on a bottle of Jack.

“You have to be Ellen right? I’m Xander Harris. Dean Winchester told me about this place. He said to ask you if Dr. Badass was in?” Xander replied confidently, leaning on the bar, “and I’ll have a PBR thanks.”

“It’s okay guys, this one’s a hunter,” yelled Ellen over the music. “Jo get yourself in here and help out.” No reply.
“Joanna Beth Harvelle, I said now!” she yelled again. This time a tiny blond, wearing a black tank top and tight low slung blue jeans came into the room. She eyed Xander over appreciatively and replied,
“Yeah Mom, okay, I was just shooting pool with Ash and few others. Who’s this?”

“This is Xander Harris; Dean Winchester sent him our way... not exactly sure for what though?” commented Ellen, fishing for information. A couple of the other hunters in the bar craftily made their way over to hear his story.

“Um it might sound a bit strange, but I’m looking for a girl.”

“Aren’t we all boy?” interrupted a dirty looking bearded guy wearing a baseball cap and a checked red and black shirt.

“Shut up Bobby and let him finish,” said Ellen giving him one of her death glares. Bobby knew when to shut his mouth and took a swig of his beer.

“This isn’t just any girl. She’d be young, but really strong; I’m talking Wonder Woman here, she might have a predisposition to fighting... Um vampires, demons that sort of thing. I just wanna know if anyone has heard anything... It’s kinda my job to know where she is so I can ring her in for proper training.” Xander took a long swallow of his beer, draining the bottle and shifted feet nervously. “Only thing is, our seer... well apparently she needs glasses cos she only told us a basic area instead of a location this time.”

“Well I ain’t heard of nothin’ like that since the Slayer I came across in Cleveland...Faith something?... Is that what you’re looking for? I heard there were thousands of them now.” Bobby sat on a tattered red bar stool and swished his drink about.

“Yeah there are thousands. Long story short, a friend of mine; Willow, she’s an awesome witch type... anyway, we did a spell to release the Slayer’s power. Now we have an army of them... most very young and not a single one of them has any idea what has happened to them or what is really out there. Slayers attract demons and vampires.. the evil undead actually have some sort of Slayer radar.”

“Well that’s.... freaking amazing,” remarked Jo as she pulled out another beer and set it on the bar in front of Xander. He smiled and took a swallow.

“Jo, language!”

“Sorry Mom.”

“You’re the ones who fought the First Evil aren’t you?” came another accented voice. Xander turned around to see a young guy with a tragic mullet hairdo standing with his mouth hanging slightly open. Xander nodded slowly, unconsciously lifting his hand to rub at his empty eye socket.

“Guys I know about these people, The Scooby Gang right? They have saved the world more times than anyone else on this planet... ever. I’m Ash.”

Xander nodded and then shrugged. He hadn't done it for recognition... he didn’t consider himself a hero, Buffy, Faith, the slayerettes and Willow were the heroes. He was just another glorified Watcher trainee.

“Well I’m getting kinda tired, so if no one knows anything I’m gonna hit the road again... find a motel or a lay by and catch some z’s. It was good to meet all of you.” Sliding a business card across the bar towards Ellen he asked, “if anyone should hear... well could ya give me a call on my cell? I’d appreciate it.” Ellen nodded as Xander got up and finished his second beer. As he turned to leave Ellen stopped him.

“There’s a spare room upstairs. Nothing fancy, but there’s a bed and a promise of a cooked breakfast if yer interested? You can go grab your stuff first.”

Xander smiled a real smile at the woman... in a way she reminded him of Joyce. “That would be great! Thanks.” He made his way out to the car to get his bag.

When he returned, tatty bag over his shoulder, Ellen smiled and yelled over the music. “Jo watch the bar, I’ll show Xander where everything is.” She held open a door and motioned for him to follow her. As they made their way upstairs, they passed a room with a sign on it ‘Dr Badass,’ he scoffed in his head... ‘wonder if Andrew has one of those!’
“That’s Ash’s room. Jo’s is here... next to mine,” she added meaningfully. Xander got the message loud and clear. The next door they came too was slightly ajar. “Here you go, bathroom is opposite and kitchen in the back downstairs if you need anything.”

“Thanks Ellen, I guess I’ll see you in the a.m.” With that he stepped through the door and closed it softly behind him.
