Challenge #10: Betrothal

An alliance must be formed in one of the oldest ways. A union between two people, for the better of all.

Choose a BtVS/AtS character (male or female) and a crossover character.

- Why is it happening?

- What happens if they don't do it?

- For kicks - at least one of the pair already has a partner. Does that relationship last or is it torn apart?

- True love must win out. Whether between the new couple, or others.

Disclaimer: I don’t own the West Wing, nor do I own Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Timeline: Around the middle of Season 2 of West Wing, after season 6 of Buffy.

Posting: Kiss me, I’m Norwegianne (when I get myself back into action), fanfiction.net, Twisting the Hellmouth when it comes up… and here.

A/N: Sort of response to the challenge, although I think I have stepped on the outside of it. Nevertheless it was an inspiration. It was also fun and easy to write. Comments are welcome, but not needed, since I had too much fun writing for anyone to bring me down. *grins*

Oh, and the final chapter has a “FLUFFY SAP” warning.

#1 Anna

Anna Lyman was sitting in her son’s office. She was regretting what she was about to do, if only because of the young blonde woman on the other side of the wall. The woman who would have been perfect for Joshua, had she only been born Jewish, and met Josh earlier.

Really, it wasn’t her fault that Noah had persisted with his little scheme. Those things were ancient history to most of the civilized world, except Noah who had a burning desire to see the heritage continue. She had that herself, what Jewish mother didn’t? But as she had told Noah, again and again, Joshua had a smart head on his shoulders. He would pick the right girl.

Except Noah hadn’t listened.

He had run into Mr. and Mrs. Rosenberg at a conference where he had been with a client.

“Mom? Donna, are you aware that there is a strange lady in my office?” Her only living offspring was standing in the door grinning at her.

“Yeah,” Donna came too. “Hi, Mrs. Lyman. Nice coat.”

“Thank you, dear. Is he well?”

“He eats marginally better, that I know of, he sleeps only a little bit, and goes to therapy. All in all, he’s in better shape than he was before it happened.”

It - the thing that could have cost her any hope of grandchildren, and a son. Hatred of people who were different had given her a fear for the future that Noah’s foolishness, as she had once judged it, was going to extinguish.

“Good, he takes his vitamins too?”

“Feel free to discuss me like I’m not even here,” Josh muttered. “I can go run the country, you know, I don’t need to be here.”

“Joshua, there is no need to sulk just because your mother is concerned about you.”

“Thank you, dear. Would you mind leaving me alone with him for a few minutes? His father left me with a task to fulfil earlier this year, but for several reasons it was postponed until just about now.”

“Sure, no problem. Josh, you have a meeting in ten in the Oval. I’ll hold all calls, unless someone declares a war on us, until then.”

Donna smiled softly and closed the door behind her.

Josh went over to sit in his chair, shrugging out of his jacket as he went. Anna resisted the urge to drag out her comb and brush his hair. He was a 37-year-old man, and wouldn’t appreciate such a gesture from his mother. Even less after he had heard what she was about to tell him.
