Leaving
I do not own anything. BTVS characters belong to Joss Whedon and whomever else claims ownership (UPN, Fox, WB, etc). Stargate:SG-1 characters belong to MGM et al. I have not seen a story like this (Cassie centric SG-1/BTVS) before. Please let me know what you think!
Chapter 1 – Leaving
Colorado Springs, Colorado
“Cassie… We are going to be late.”
Major Samantha Carter walked into the house and felt the hair on the back of her neck rise. “Cassie? Where are you?” Sam quickly scanned the room and her stomach sunk as she saw a manila envelope propped up on the hall table:
In bold dark letters, “Sam”
Sam walked over to the table and picked up the envelope. Inside she found a note, four smaller envelopes, a driver’s license, a birth certificate and a Security Pass to Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base:
Dear Sam,
I know you will be the one to find this note first, so I will
explain what is going on. Enclosed you will find all of the
essentials of my life as Cassandra Frasier. I know that all of
you went to a lot of trouble to obtain these things, but I will
no longer be in need of them.
I cannot go through this again. I love all of you—you are my
family. I have already watched as one family – my first
family - died, and I refuse to watch each of you perish as
well. I loved Mom and I love the rest of you. I beg you to
understand my decision.
Sam, you saved me. I remember the fear and the sadness…
then you came. You have never abandoned me, even when you thought we
would both die. I know you told Jack that
you knew the device was not going to explode, but I saw
your face and I knew that you were willing to die to give a
little girl comfort in her last minutes. I thank you for that
and I hope that you can forgive me for leaving. But I feel
that I must go.
Please give each of the remaining letters to General
Hammond, Jack, Daniel, and Teal’c. Tell them that I love
them and I will miss them.
Love always,
Cassandra
Sam finished reading the letter, ran out of the door and drove off quickly. Already she was planning the best way to find Cassandra.
Getting out her cell phone, Samantha dialed a number and said:
“Sir, we have a problem”
Los Angeles, California
After years of living around the military, protocols become second nature. The military almost always follow standard protocols and, when you know these protocols, avoiding detection can be easy… or easier than movies and books would have you believe.
I am sure that the majority of the SGC feel that I am reacting in the same way that any 16-year-old teenager who has just lost her mother would react – by running off to the big city to blend in and get away from everything.
I beg to differ, but I am reacting in the same way as any 16-year-old alien from a planet that was wiped out by the same evil alien race that just killed my mother would react. I am running away to a small town: Sunnydale, California.
I need to get away from death and fighting. I want to go off to a safe, comforting place in suburbia. When looking through towns in Southern California (only at the library, not at home, ‘cause Sam will check the hard drive first thing), Sunnydale caught my eye. The picture on the website was so cheery and the high school is brand new. There are also a lot of businesses that look promising for someone looking to work under the table.
I sit in my seat on the bus, my newly red hair hanging straight around my face, my sunglasses hiding my eyes, and walk into my future—a future free from pain and loneliness. I can’t wait.
