Chapter 1

------------------------

"Duck!" Buffy yelled at Adrienne Matthews.

Adrienne frowned. "Why?" She asked.

"Just do it!"

The nine-year-old Slayer-In-Training obeyed, and an arrow flew over her head.

"End the simulation." Buffy snapped.

Up in the Control Room, Willow punched in the Quit Code, hoping Buffy wouldn't destroy yet another pair of the expensive simulation goggles. No such luck.

With a scream of frustration, Buffy threw her headgear at the wall, embedding them into the brick.

"Uh...can you be careful, Buffy? Those goggles cost a lot to make." Willow said over the intercom.

"No." Buffy snarled before rounding on Adrienne, whose blue eyes were wide with fear. "How many times do I have to tell you?" She ranted. "When I tell you to do something, you do it. If this was real life you'd be dead!"

"B-but you’re always t-telling us t-to think for ourselves b-because one d-day you won’t b-be there t-to save us." The dishwater blonde stammered.

“I’m also always telling you to listen to your instincts. Did they tell you to ignore me?” Buffy inquired sarcastically, one honey-coloured eyebrow raised.

Adrienne blushed. “No.” She mumbled.

“What was that?”

“No!” Adrienne said loudly.

“That’s what I thought.” Buffy crossed her arms. “Go.” She said, jerking her head towards the door. “Clean up and report to Dawn for KP duty. You’re the dishwasher this week.”

Grumbling under her breath, Adrienne stormed off.

“Wow, B,” Faith said, walking into the chrome simulation room, “I’ve gotta hand it to you, you’re a better bitch than I ever could be.”

Buffy glared at the brunette Slayer. “If Adrienne doesn’t learn to listen to me when I tell her what to do she’s not going to last long.” She said hotly.

“She’s only a kid, Buff.” Willow placated.

“She’ll be a dead kid if she doesn’t pay attention.” Buffy retorted.

“Well that settles it.” Willow decided.

“Settles what?” Buffy’s hazel eyes narrowed in suspicion.

“You need a vacation.”

------------------------

Harry frowned, looking up at Ginny Longbottom. “What?” He asked.

Ginny rolled her eyes and repeated her statement. “You need a vacation. You spend all your time reading and teaching. Breaks are good, Harry. They help us unwind.”

“Ginny, these kids need to learn how to defend themselves.” Harry said. “Yes, Voldemort’s gone, but that doesn’t mean the world’s any safer, and-” He stopped when Ginny’s eyes glazed over. “And you’re not listening.”

“Nope.” Ginny sat down, resting one hand on Harry’s arm, the other stroking her stomach. “Harry, I know you only want the best for these kids.” She began gently. “I know you just want to make sure they can defend themselves, and they can make the world a better place, and believe me, I’m grateful for that. If you can make a difference then good for you. It’s nice to know that children have a chance with you around.”

The hand on her stomach pressed down; as if Ginny was unconsciously reassuring herself that her own child was safe in her belly. “But you need to take some time off.” She paused, seemingly collecting her thoughts.

“Harry,” she said, “think about it. You’re 24-years-old, single, and you spend your Friday nights grading papers and writing lesson plans. You’re turning into a young Snape…except you wash your hair. Well, as the only one of your best friends currently not on honeymoon, I have decided that won’t be happening. You need a vacation, and you’re gonna get one. Tomorrow afternoon at one-oh-five you’re taking the floo to Hawaii. I want you to have a good time and shag anything in a skirt. Got me?”

Harry grinned. “Well, since you’ve gone to so much trouble, I guess I can take a break.” He agreed.
