Getting On Task

A/N: Thus comes the conclusion of this little ficlet! I hope you all enjoyed the little bee of muse that’s been buzzing in my head. Also, though this fic was rated PG-13 I raised it to R for language! :0)

Dis: I don’t own BTVS, Angel, or Supernatural.

“So your dad’s missing, huh?” Cordelia nodded toward the light switch, making the lights turn on, and Dean jumped. He whipped around to face her, trying to focus since the bright light hurt his eyes. “From a ‘hunting’ trip?”

“Would you STOP doing that?” he said, going to the lights and flipping them off. “You’re creeping me out!”

“Eesh, cranky!” she said, watching as he flipped on a lamp that wasn’t as bright at the lights before. “I’m trying to help you here! By the way, where’s my thank you? I saved your ass out there!”

“Oh, okay. Thanks.” Dean’s grin turned into a glowering look. “Now get out.”

“Not until you call Sam!” she insisted, getting in front of him while he tried to walk away from her. She turned corporeal because he couldn’t walk through her so instead he just walked around her.

“Why? What’s the big deal anyway?” Cordelia looked away him, finding the dirty ashtray a little too fascinating. Seeing this he halted in his steps and looked at her suspiciously. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“I don’t know much,” she lied, now looking him dead in the eye. “But you need your brother. You need to be WITH your brother.”

Cordelia knew of the fire. Knew that Sam would die with Jess unless Dean intervened. Knew that Dean would share the same fate and die in a not so pleasant way thanks to a Wendigo. She also knew that Dean and Sam both played an important role in an upcoming apocalypse. She shivered now just thinking about it.

“You.” Dean pointed a finger right at her nose, making her go a little cross-eyed before she swatted it away. “Know something. And until you tell me what it is, I’m not going.”

“Fine.”

As she spoke, her voice got higher and angrier at each word.

“You want to know? Unless you get your stubborn ass over to Stanford and talk to your brother, he dies. Your dad dies before his time, as do you. Okay? Is that clear enough for you? Is this getting through your head? Do you finally understand?”

Dean was speechless. When she talked of Sammy dying his mind went into panic mode. He stood, now fully sober, and began to pack his bag. Panicked that she scared him off Cordelia put her hand on his arm to stop him.

“What’re you doing?”

“I’m going to Sam. Forget calling him, he’ll ignore my calls anyway!”

A smile lit up her face as he went from room to room gathering his stuff. Finally packed, they went the door. He opened it and faltered when seeing Tracey there, leaning seductively against the doorway.

“How did you...”

“Find you? It was easy... Why’d you leave? I thought we were going to have fun?”

“Sorry babe, duty calls,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders.

He tried to push past her but she stepped in his way. He, growing impatient, took her by the arm and pushed her to the side harder than he intended. She stumbled, almost falling.

“Hey! You jerk!”

“Back off Barbie,” said Cordelia as she faced off to the girl. “Go crawl back to the trailer park that you and that outfit came from.”

“Why you little.”

Tracey ran full speed ahead toward Cordy, who just looked bored as Tracey passed right through her. Tracey stumbled and ended up flat on her ass while looking at Cordelia with wide eyes.

“Jesus Christ! You’re a-a witch!”

“Yep. Better go before I send Lucifer on your heels!” threatened Cordelia, holding up her hands with her fingers curled as if trying to pretend she was an evil witch.

Lightning flashed in the air and thunder clapped, a warning from the Powers to Cordelia for sending a threat to an innocent. Tracey, however, took it another way and scrambled to her feet. Cordelia was almost positive that she saw a little wet spot on the back of the too short skirt as the woman runaway screaming.

Cordelia turned to face Dean, who had a bright grin on his face. He was also trying his hardest not to laugh but his shaking shoulders and the rumbling in his chest signaled that it was a losing battle.

“Nice,” he managed before stepping out of the room. On the way, Cordelia whacked him on the back of his head for being such a sex fiend then walked ahead of him to the Impala.

“Hurry up and start driving.”

“You need to stop doing that,” said Dean, talking about her smacking the back of his head.

“But it’s my new favorite hobby,” reasoned Cordelia.

Shaking his head, Dean entered the car and Cordelia phased in. The drive was comfortable, a slight argument over the music left Cordelia huffing as metal played in the small space. Luckily, she had reasoned with him to at least keep the level of volume down.

“What happens?” he asked after a while, his eyes staying on the road but his tone was more than a little serious. “To Sammy, Dad, and me.”

“I can’t say,” she said after a hesitant pause.

“Why the hell not?” he demanded, head turning away from the road for a moment to stare at her.

“It’s against the rules.”

“Fuck the rules!” he barked, slamming a hand against the steering wheel, then mentally apologizing to his baby for abusing her.

Cordelia turned her whole body to Dean and she felt some sympathy for the guy. He looked scared for him and his family. He also looked tired and worn out. Cordelia sighed while resting her hand on his knee. She also chose to ignore that little smirk he got when she touched him there!

“Please, that’s so not happening...”

He frowned, but she continued on.

“Look, I know it’s hard. Just trust me when I say unless you and Sam get together...Unite and become a team again... Well, it won’t be a happily ever after. The Step Sisters Win, Hook takes over Neverland...”

“Bambi dies. I get it. I get it.”

Nodding Cordelia turned back forward and prepared herself for a long ride.

Well, it hadn’t been that long. They made it to Stanford in no time and Cordelia turned her head toward the crowded campus. It didn’t take her long to pick out Sam. Dean stepped out of the car and then leaned over the top of the car to look at him.

“Hello Salty Goodness,” said Cordy. “Sammy’s grown up.”

Dean nodded, ignoring the face that his guide, guardian, or whatever the hell she was: was checking his brother out. He watched his brother put his arm around a blonde girl and Dean was happy that Sam had found someone. Yet, he still wasn’t convinced that it was the best thing to get involved with a girl while in this sort of business. He knew about that first hand.

Shaking the thoughts of Cassie away, Dean again focused on his brother then went back into his car.

“Hey! Where’re you going?”

“I’ll do this later. At night. So that if we do make a scene it won’t be in front of a million people.”

“Ugh, fine. I’ll be right back.”

Dean watched as Cordelia walked up to the couple. They were oblivious to her as she sat down and listened to their conversation. Dean stiffened, though, when Sam turned his head toward her and stared her right in the eye. Did he feel her? Did he see her? The blonde, however, brought his attention back to her.

Cordelia stood at the same time as them and walked back to the car.

“First, your brother just wigged me out. Also, I know where they live.”

~*~*~*~*~*

Dean spent the rest of the day sleeping. He was worn out and the added stress of the possible danger his family was in started to settle uneasily in his gut. He awakened to the smell of pastries and eagerly dug into the greased bag by the bed.

“You’re welcome,” said Cordelia as she handed Dean his favorite non-alcoholic drink. “Now, eat up and let’s get going.”

He did and soon they were traveling down a dark street and parked as close to the building as possible. Dean got out first and Cordy followed. She frowned when he went for the window instead of the door.

“Are you insane,” she hissed while looking around for the police, snoopy old women, and even neighborhood watch.

“Sometimes,” he answered while opening the window.

Cordelia shook her head then gave him a push, making him land roughly on the other side.

“Oops?”

He cursed and soon the curses turned into grunts as he fought with his brother. It was when the lights turned on that Cordelia gave a sad smile to the window. Sure, she would miss the guy, but she had more important things to do. Like look after their father.

So as she faded away she saw Dean turn his head slightly as if looking for her. Soon his attention was fully on Sam and Cordelia smiled.

She her duty as a Guide was done. It had been one of her easier jobs, thanks to his loyalty and love for his family. Dean was a great Warrior for the Powers and Cordelia intended to watch over his family for as long as she could to make sure they succeeded against Evil.

A breeze fluttered the leaves that had been in the grass and as the wind died down, she was gone.
